Giulia Dabalà
Avantgarde Pop
With her debut album “Gold” and the song “War Drums”, Giulia Dabala won the Pop category at the Demotape Clinic 2020 and also won “Demo of the Year”.
Giulia Dabalà returns with her uncompromising second album “Cruda”, produced in collaboration with Hook (Muthoni Drummer Queen, Murmures Barbares), known for his powerful rap beats, and Ripperton, a Lausanne-based electronic producer whose sense of detail and finesse she admires. They bring new depth to Giulia Dabalà's tracks and provide an ideal stage for her eclectic musical taste. A reappropriation and legitimization of female anger, carried by massive beats and subtle sonic richness. On “Cruda” she fully embraces this emotion, often considered masculine and which she has learned not to show as a woman. Each track is a raw disclosure that expresses what she could not say at certain moments.
The first single, "Chew Toy," criticizes how much space men's anger takes up in relationships. When she shows this emotion herself, she is dismissed as "too emotional," which weakens her feelings. The song becomes a statement that calls for reclaiming anger and the power that comes with it. This theme also appears in "Set Fire (To Myself)," where she sings, "I can feel the bitterness seeping into my bones, I won't set myself on fire just to keep everyone else warm." The protagonist has had enough of sacrificing herself for others and no longer wants to withdraw for fear of rejection. Questions about gender and social inequality run throughout the album.
